Understanding Immunity in Ayurveda

Immunity is a biological term that describes a state of having sufficient biological defenses to avoid infection, disease or other unwanted biological invasion. In Ayurveda, immunity is referred to as Ojas, which is considered the essence of vitality and health.

The philosophy of Ayurveda is based upon the theory of ‘Panchamahabhutas’, according to which all objects in the universe including the human body are composed of five basic elements namely Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space.

In addition, there are three physiological entities called ‘tridoshas’ namely ‘vata’, ‘pitta’ and ‘kapha’ that are derived from different combinations of the five basic elements. The term ‘dosha’ refers to an impurity and an optimum equilibrium among the three doshas is associated with a healthy constitution of the body.  Any imbalance affects the metabolism of the body and results in disease.

Health is a manifestation of the balanced state of all dhatus, doshas and malas, both in quantity and quality. According to the concept of Ayurveda, every individual has a unique constitution which governs the structural and functional attributes of the body and mind, and also the health and disease patterns of an individual. Vata is mainly a combination of Air and Space, and governs muscle;  Pitta is primarily composed of Fire and Water and governs digestion; and Kapha is composed of Earth and Water and is the energy that forms the body structure, gives support and holds the cells together. It lubricates the joint and maintains immunity.

The immune function could be enhanced from having a balanced healthy diet, lifestyle including daily rituals and incorporating herbs, that maintain balance in doshas, strengthen the digestion and build healthy tissues.
